So, when I heard that Pat Benatar was doing a show in my neck of the woods, I immediately marked the date on my calender and hoped that we could get someone to babysit.  And in the nick of time, everything came together  and we got a night out.  Hell , I deserved it especially since I hadn’t had a break in weeks.  A night of high energy, rock rhythms, and empowerment songs is just what the doctor ordered for me.

While all of my friends were going to see Maxwell at the Hollywood Bowl, we went against the grain and decided to rock with Pat.  Never having seen her before, my expectations were high considering all of those hits she has.  I mean, how could we go wrong?

I guess the question is not how, but WHY? And the questions are really for Pat herself…

Why, Pat, did you roll out of bed 30 minutes before the show started and forget to get dressed?  Why, Pat, did you start out with some as you put it “transitional” material?  Why, Pat, did you criticize the movie (The Legend of Billie Jean) that featured one of your biggest hits (Invincible) that happens to be one of my childhood favorites?  Why, Pat, did you throw that song away not giving it any energy?  It sounded laborious or effortfull  – just flat out like you didn’t want to do it.  Why, Pat, do you play air guitar?  You used to be so cool.  Air guitar?  Why, Pat, does your husband and lead guitarist have more fun than you do?  Why, Pat, did I leave there not feeling pump, but deflated? Lastly, why Pat did you have me waste my one little night out?

I left there feeling like we kept you up last night.  Did you make soccer practice on time the next morning?  You should have.  The show was over by 11pm.

And, now here I am in the red when it comes to the MAGIC part.  Micheal is gone now and I could use a heavy dose.  Attention all record companies – got any MAGIC?

You could say she just had an off night, but I don’t think so.  Oh, I still love her though, and she sounds better than ever!  And, I still can’t stop singing “Love is a Battlefield” and…

Marketing Summit.  During the Independent Music Showcase, Dr. Duane Wooten and his wife Diana Wooten of Marble Ice Entertainment of Phoenix, Ariz. were in the audience and were impressed with what they saw.  So much so, that they connected with the Vice-President of Urban Network and CEO of Webb Marketing/PR Inc., Arthur Mitchell, to find out more about the possibility of working with this talented group of artists and groups.  From there, “The Future” was born…

The thought was to put together a compilation CD featuring these artists from various genres, that could serve as a platform to not only jumpstart their budding careers, but more importantly, to form a partnership between these small artist-owned labels with the more established Marble Ice.  By pooling their individual resources together, the group is able to take full advantage of a strong collective that serves the greater common good.  And as the music business changes, “The Future Volume 1” is now becoming a shining example of how it can work for the independent label in today’s challenging times. 

LC, a rapper from the Bronx, NY, was the first artist released off the compilation with his hit single “Never Done”.  In rotation on over 45 stations in the southern and Midwest regions, the single has received rave reviews from Dj’s and program directors for over three months now.

Since then, other more established artists have also signed on to be a part of the program  take part in this extraordinary project to help give the newer artists more exposure, as well as further promote their own current projects…

R&B songbird Lina was first to get involved. Her "Stranger On Earth" debut was released on Atlantic records. The critically acclaimed album was named as one of "2001's Top 10 albums of the year" by Billboard magazine. Lina's sophomore album "The Inner Beauty Movement" was released on Hidden Beach/Moodstar/Universal in 2005 and produced such hits as "Smooth" the steppers anthem and "Leaving you." Her newest album"Morning Star" was released on Moodstar Recordings Lina's own Label and critics are raving about it!

Industry veteran Ralph Tresvant was next to embrace the idea.  He is well known as the shining star that has been captivating audiences for over 25 years as a solo artist, actor, entertainer, writer, producer and legendary front man of super group New Edition. Ralph Tresvant has helped to pave the way for so many others like New Kid's On The Block, Backstreet Boys, N-Sync, Chris Brown, Neo, Usher and Justin Timberlake who have all followed in his footsteps.

While the famed 90’s band Mint Condition more recently committed.  After a six-year hiatus, the band released its sixth LP, "Livin' the Luxury Brown" on their own CagedBird Records in 2005 and a live DVD, "Live From the 9:30 Club" in 2006. Their latest album “E-Life” dropped in early 2008.

Currently, “Something to Give You” by Ralph Tresvant, “My Man” by Lina, and “Missing You” by Aquia are being promoted at radio together as a triple threat with even greater success.  With over 70 Markets spinning it, this maxi-single has left a long lasting imprint on R&B radio throughout the country.

I had spent much time working closely with his management, Artists-First Entertainment, but never got a chance to speak with him directly. So, they finally informed me that his busy schedule of being an ever-expanding artist, prolific writer, and dutiful father had an opening long enough for me to get the answers I was looking for…

First off, what does LC Stand for?

Lavon Collins. “L” and “C” are the initials of my first and last name.

Tell me about the Bronx, your hometown.

Well, Hip-Hop originated from the Bronx. The great ones originated from the Bronx

like Africa Bambatta and KRS-One. I need to take the torch and run with it. My town needs someone else to step up and carry on tradition. You know, to bring Hip-Hop back to where it originated.

What is your earliest memory of music?

In Jerome where I’m from, I can remember the break dancing contests and the turntables. It was a place where I could express myself and I fell in love with reaching out to people.

Who were your early influences?

Special Ed, Heavy D and the Boyz, and Big Daddy Kane.

So, tell me about your new songs “Never Done” and “Are you There?”.

“Never Done” is actually a club track inviting people to leave all the negativity outside when they come to the club…To just get on the dance floor and have a good time…To keep shaking and having a good time. When I say never done, I actually mean that we are never done having a good time on the dance floor.

“Are You There?” is a song I wrote to touch bases with the fathers that are out there having kids, creating kids, and not taking care of them. So, I wrote this song as if I were the child actually speaking to that father who is not there. I wanted to write a song like that because there are a lot of children out their hurting because they don’t know who their fathers are. These men need to take responsibility for their actions. I just wanted to lend an opinion. I didn’t want to attack the men that do that.

Are you speaking from personal experience?

Yes. It has happened to me. There is more to life than just partying and having a good time. There are actually some issues out here that need to be spoke upon. I wanted to touch on a real social issue. I feel like missing fathers is a social issue. Broken homes are an everyday thing and they shouldn’t be.

Who did you work with on these tracks?

My manager, Don K. Taylor, from Artists-First produced “Are You There?”. Phase from Time is Money Entertainment produced “Never Done”. Oh, and Terry Taylor sang the hook on “Are You There”. He’s a very good guy.

So, I’m seeing another side to you. What would you say is your mission as a musician?

My mission is to touch as many people as possible. I want to show versatility in my music as well as growth. I want to give back to bring back creativity and not be a one-sided artist. I believe that with this talent, there is a great responsibility. I want to talk about topics that people are not expecting to hear. That separates me from the elite.

How would you describe the power of music?

The power of music should be taken very seriously. It is a responsibility. It is so powerful because of the words. Words last longer than a punch. A person can hit you and in due time, that pain will go away. But, a word can last so long. It sticks out forever. Music is very powerful…because if you can play a song 25 years from now and if it is a strong song, it is still relevant…So, I believe that you should deliver good music that can actually change someone’s life.

So besides the music, what are the other irons in the fire that I heard about?

Television, film, the runway, and more…The sky is the limit…Everything that can better me. But, most importantly, I have a 3-year-old son, Jaden, and want to leave something behind so he can be proud of. I am definitely trying to set an example.

Does he show interest in music?

Yes. He might be the future when I’m done. He’s going to take over! (Ha Ha)

Ahh…But, you said you were ‘never done’.

I am never done. But, because he is my son, I will never be done. I can also live vicariously through him. He can take over from there…

I must say that it was refreshing to talk to a new Hip-Hop artist that didn’t sound strung out on some illegal substance, that didn’t have pending court cases (per his management), and that actually takes an active role in raising his child. So, who is LC? He is a shining example of what Hip-Hop should be. He is the future.

LC is featured on the soon to be released “The Future Vol. 1”compilation due out later this year. Its first single “Never Done” is already gaining momentum and has just been added at radio stations all over the country.
